Welcome to the Athens College American Civil War Wiki!

  • Why are we creating a wiki?

The purpose of this wiki is for Mrs. Axioti's GYM III ESL class to share with each other all that we researched about the history of the American Civil War.

During the project, we researched in-depth the topics and people in this sad period in American history. We examined the lives of slaves in the South and learned that even former slaves and free men who fought on the Union side of the Civil War faced discrimination and unequal treatment. We saw that the Underground Railroad was the only hope of many slaves; and how Harriet Tubman conducted a lucky few to freedom.

We examined the cause of the abolitionists like Frederick Douglass and saw how men like John Brown were willing to die for their beliefs.

We looked at the political events that surrounded the war, and how Southern gentlemen like John C Calhoun and Jefferson Davis believed passionately in the rights of states to decide their own laws. In the North, we examined the life Abraham Lincoln and how his beliefs, particularly his hatred of slavery, led to his assassination.

Finally, we researched what life was like on the battlefields. For example, we found that ordinary people like foreign-born military men and Matthew Brady became heroes because of their skills with their tools of trade. Clara Barton, a nurse, tended the soldiers with such care and dedication that she became known as "the Angel of the Battlefield ". Army leaders of the North, Ulysses S Grant, and of the South , Robert E Lee , fought with such passion and strategy that they became legends in military history. And when the war was finally finished, we saw the full horror of the treatment of prisoners at places like Andersonville Prison.

Without all these perspectives the full story of the America Civil War could not be told!
